At 9:15am on the 21st of October 1966, a colliery spoil tip above the Welsh village of Aberfan, collapsed and slid down the mountainside. It engulfed Pantglas Junior School and a row of nearby houses. 144 people were killed, 116 of them children, most between the ages of 7 and 10. The warning signs had been raised for years, and the inquiry that followed found the National Coal Board responsible for a disaster that never should have happened.
