He came up the road with a badge and a cover story. He came down with something older than both. The spirit has been watching Ryder Hill since before the road existed. Before the town. The Algonquin people knew what was in these woods. They called it by name and they told their children when to come inside and when to stay away from the tree line. Then the missionaries came and changed their folklore. The body on Federal Hill has no organs. No smell. No explanation. Deacon finds the sheriff exactly where he was told to: at the bar, half a seven and seven in, eating catfish. Sheriff Mara Quinn is not what she appears. Neither is the town doctor. Neither is the body in the morgue with the chest cavity cleaned out, talon marks going in one direction, and a bite pattern that suggests something chomped through bone and pulled.

The world is a lie and Deacon Miller has spent his whole life keeping it that way. The ShadowGate Bureau is a covert government agency tasked with sealing the rifts between our world and the things that slither through them. Myths aren't stories. Monsters aren't metaphors. And the men and women who stop them don't get parades.

The mine is a thousand years old. The owl bear found them anyway. A gelatinous cube the size of a building slides past in the dark. A trapped scroll turns out to be a fireball. The cocaine owlbear comes back with Tristan's spear still in its chest, eyes glowing, moon dust caked around its beak, and no interest in negotiating. Tristan had nine hit points. The owlbear hit for ten. She chose blaze of glory.

The door to the lodge has claw marks on it. Three claws. The owlbear has five. Something else was here overnight. Day two in the Wylde Forest. Rock has made himself a helmet out of a mounted owlbear head. The map now responds to moon dust. Elsie's daughter's tooth is stuck in the fabric and probably not coming back. The fire gremlin does not do drugs. The band is still arguing about Ann leaving. The map knows where Ella is. It also knows where the witch is.

The chest was trapped. Of course it was trapped. Cassie opened it anyway. The bandits have a name — a witch with long black hair and a wart on her nose who paid for a shipment of moon dust and took a gnome girl as a bonus. The forest is closing its paths behind them. The cocaine owlbear is back, powder around its beak, eyes like dinner plates, and a stat block that does not care about anyone's feelings.
